Will Solar Panels Save You Money?
The simple answer is that solar panels will save you money once they’re installed and operating. Of course, the amount of money you save will depend on what you’re currently paying for electricity and how much energy you can generate using your system.
To work out how much you’ll save, you need to look at the cost of your electricity and then subtract how many kWh your system is likely to generate. Work out the yearly saving with a solar panel system and multiply it by the lifespan of the system in years (usually 25 to 30 years) to find out the total saving the system will make you.
You can then remove the cost of the system itself and the installation from the total savings to see how much you’ll save. You can also divide the cost of the system by the yearly savings to see how many years it’ll take before your system has paid for itself.
Can You Power Your Home with Solar Panels?
Once you’ve paid for and maintained your solar panel system, you’re effectively generating free electricity. This leads many to consider fully powering their home through solar panels and never paying for electricity again.
While in some parts of the world, this is theoretically possible, considerations like planning permission and high initial costs need to be taken into account. Weather can also scupper your plans, even in places with a high potential for generating solar power.
As solar power is a big investment in terms of money, time, and organisation, it’s always a good idea to start small instead of going all-in at the first opportunity.
