Telenor ranks among top IoT operators in the world, reveals new Berg Insight 2021 global report

Internet of Things (IoT) Article

In the 2021  edition of their annual – The Global M2M/IoT Communications Market report – market research firm Berg Insight confirms Telenor’s position as a top 3 IoT connectivity provider in Europe and a top 10 provider worldwide by volume.

According to the new report, the global number of cellular IoT subscribers increased by 12 percent during 2020 to reach 1.7 billion – despite the negative impact from the Covid-19 pandemic. By 2025, Berg Insight predicts that there will be almost 4 billion IoT devices connected to cellular networks worldwide.

The regional markets Western Europe and North America recorded the highest growth rates during 2020. China domestic is the world’s largest market for cellular IoT connectivity services by volume with North America and Western Europe rank as the second and third largest markets.

Telenor is amongst the top ten global mobile operators who collectively supply 86 percent of total connections in the world, of which the majority (87%) are accounted for by the three top Chinese operators. Telenor is the only Nordic mobile operator appearing in the top ten list in this report.

The connected car is currently one of the strongest trends with around 70 percent of new cars sold featuring embedded cellular connectivity in the regions. Other key application areas are fleet management of commercial vehicles, smart utility metering and monitored alarm systems.

Telenor Connexion CEO, Mats Lundquist, says: “It is rewarding to see that we are continually recognized as one of the top IoT operators in the world– despite harsh competition and the ongoing pandemic. It is also very positive that many of our key target market verticals continue to grow as this creates a continued positive situation for our customers.”

In March, Telenor Group was recognised as a Leader in the 2021 Gartner Magic Quadrant for Managed IoT Connectivity Services, Worldwide. This was the second year in a row Telenor Group is positioned in the Leaders quadrant in recognition of the company’s overall completeness of vision and ability to execute.

Earlier this year, Telenor unified its Internet of Things offering across the Nordics and internationally, gathering the Nordic IoT portfolio and the global Telenor Connexion portfolio under the brand Telenor IoT. This focus enables Telenor to act as one united global IoT team, with dedicated full time IoT team specialists covering the needs of organisations of all sizes including meeting the specific demands of the world’s most demanding international IoT deployments.

Telenor is one of the world’s largest operator groups, providing IoT services both for local and multinational companies by its IoT specialists located in 18 countries in Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific and Europe. Telenor was an early pioneer in the IoT area and today operates over 17 million IoT units in over 190 countries and has been assisting customers with innovative managed IoT connectivity solutions for more than two decades.
