Blockchain technology comes to online video games
Planet IX is an online strategy video. So far, nothing unusual. The peculiar thing is that it is a digital copy of the Planet and that it uses blockchain technology , NFTs (non-fungible assets) and cryptocurrencies. It definitely seems that video games are becoming more and more like reality.
It is these characteristics that have led Crowd1, one of the world leaders in multi-level marketing (MLM), to start a collaboration with Planet IX. The latter is described as a business and strategy game based on blockchain technology with a virtual copy of our planet as the playing field. Players buy PIX packs (virtual representations of real places) and build their collection in the virtual world. Afterward, players can also purchase NFTs that are in-game representations of famous buildings and monuments (such as the Eiffel Tower) or even trade them with each other in the Planet IX marketplace. The game is currently in the beta phase, having been released in mid-July, but it seems to be being received with enthusiasm, which is why Crowd1 wanted to get involved in the project.
Every week, a collection of PIXs is released in an initiative called Pack Drops , with PIXs being the content that players use to build their collection. The popularity of those packs, so far, is staggering. The first batch sold out in an hour and a half; the second, in 35 minutes. These data show to what extent a game like Planet IX was expected, which is why Crowd1 has joined the initiative from the beginning, even before it was presented at the Dubai Live event in May 2021.
On the other hand, the developers of Planet IX want to take advantage of the growing popularity of the game for altruistic purposes: the fight against climate change and for sustainability. The goal is for the game to host collaborations with non-profit associations, such as organizations that are dedicated to planting trees. These initiatives may not have much influence on the dynamics of the video game, but they will have a long-term impact on the world.
